Artist Statement

I am inherently curious. Life excites me.

I am constantly lured by the interactive and dramatic beauty between the land, sea and sky in all of its atmospheric conditions. I am out to capture that fleeting moment that leaves me awestruck or humbled: a lifting fog, the last glowing light of the day, a sunset or sunrise. Because I hold the natural world with such reverence, I often choose to paint plein air in fairly remote locations. My goal is not to realistically document a place, but to convey the initial inspiration. However, an urban scene does occasionally entice me with its energizing and/or chaotic ambience.

When painting or drawing the human form, I am always amazed at all of the nuances in skin color, shapes, folds and body language. I strive to capture some part of the model's human spirit -- an intensity of personality, a gentleness, aloofness.

My subject matter spans a wide spectrum, and materials used are always subject to change. At an early age I was introduced to many artists, artistic methods and media. These early experiences have held an impact on my approach to creativity. One moment my studio is filled with fiber arts, another moment there might be sculpture or printmaking being created. Always oil paintings are in various stages of completion.

Oil painting is the most pleasant and challenging for me and it is what keeps me in the studio day after day.

Thank you for taking the time to view my art.
